In Assam, miscreants torched down houses and shops at some places in violence hit areas. Inspector General of Police, L R Bishnoi told AIR that around 15 houses were partially torched down in Lower Assam yesterday. He informed that security forces arrested 3 miscreants red handed when they tried to burn down a tea factory in Kokrajhar district. Meanwhile, death toll has gone up to 77 in recent violence in the Assam. Senior police officials said that 44 people lost their lives in Sonitpur, 30 in Kokrajhar and 3 in Chirang district of the State. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh alongwith senior officials of his Ministry yesterday visited Sonitpur and Kokrajhar district. He announced that the National Investigation Agency would conduct an inquiry into the violence.
Mr Singh also assured that strict action would be taken against the National Democratic Front of Bodoland( Sangbijit group) militants involved in recent killings. Over 14 thousand people have taken shelter at relief camps in four districts. Curfew continues in many areas and the Army is staging flag march. Security has been beefed up in the wake of dawn to the dusk bandh call given by Asom Gana Parishad and other organizations today protesting the incident. Some organizations, including the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad have demanded President’s Rule in the state alleging that state Government has failed to maintain law and order situation.
