In a recent episode of the program "Spotlight", a discussion took place on the remarkable achievements of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs over the past nine years. The program shed light on the transformative initiatives implemented by the ministry to uplift and empower the marginalized tribal communities across India. The participants of the discussion were Pravir Krishna, Former Managing Director of the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (TRIFED), and Gaura Dhawan Lal, the anchor of the program.
”
”During the engaging conversation, Pravir Krishna emphasized the importance of mainstreaming tribes, which is not only a constitutional mandate but also a national priority for the government. He highlighted the ministry's focus on the tribal population residing in forests, which constitutes approximately 50% of the total tribal population of 11.5 crores. These skilled tribal individuals possess expertise in handlooms, handicrafts, and non-timber forest produce worth an estimated two lakh crores.
”
”The achievements of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs can be attributed to three major schemes: the introduction of a minimum support price (MSP) scheme for 100 tribal forest products, value addition, branding, and processing through the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (Van Dhan), and the direct marketing of handlooms and handicrafts. These schemes have drastically transformed the tribal marketing system, providing fair prices and significantly increasing the incomes of tribal communities.
”
”Pravir Krishna shared his experience of working with TRIFED and highlighted the focus on branding, packaging, and marketing as the key challenges in the tribal ecosystem. By establishing numerous value-addition and processing centers across the country, the tribals were empowered to become entrepreneurs, resulting in a revolutionized economic and social landscape. This shift has led to improved access to education, healthcare, reduced exploitation by middlemen, and increased confidence among tribal communities.
”
”The social impact of these initiatives has been tremendous, as witnessed by the positive changes in the lives of tribal populations. With the rise of value-added products, such as mahua-based sugar replacing liquor, tribals have experienced increased income levels, enhanced accounting systems, and reduced dependency on exploitative traders and money lenders.
”
”Although significant progress has been made, the ministry acknowledges that there is still work to be done. With approximately 60% of the tribal population residing in forests, the ministry's future steps include linking tribal skills and products to larger markets, both nationally and internationally. The goal is to provide tribals with 70% to 80% of the final value chain, thus enabling them to transition from producers to entrepreneurs and industrialists.
”
”Despite the challenges faced along the journey, the efforts of the ministry, supported by dedicated officials and government leadership, have brought about a transformational change.
”
”The achievements of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs not only enhance the economic and social well-being of tribes but also enrich India as a nation culturally. The success of these initiatives serves as a testament to the power of inclusive development and the tremendous potential of marginalized communities when provided with the right opportunities and support.
”
”Full discussion at: https://youtu.be/RXydHdeObz0
