In Odisha, millions of marooned people are starving without food and water since days in the devastating flood even as water has started receding in Mahanadi and its tributaries. On Monday being a full moon day, the high tide in the Bay of Bengal hardly enabled rivers to discharge the flood water, forcing people to cling to roof tops, school buildings and shanties on embankments. As per reports received from the Odisha Government, so far there has been 17 human casualities in the current flood, though it is expected to be much more.Inadequate supply of relief materials and with the administration yet to reach half of the flood-affected areas, helpless people in the marooned areas are waiting to return to their home once the water recede in the rivers. About 22 lakh people in 3505 villages have been badly affected in the current flood in 19 of the 30 districts in the state.Meanwhile, the state government has cancelled leave of all the doctors of the flood-affected districts in order to provide health services to the people.
