Militants attack kills three foreign soldiers and five civilian workers

<br/>In Afghanistan, three foreign soldiers and five civilian workers were killed when militants attacked an Afghan National Civil Order Police headquarters in Kandahar city on Tuesday. A NATO statement issued today said that militants attacked the headquarters perimeter with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device followed by small-arms, rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun fire. It said that Afghan National Civil Order Police and international forces secured the headquarters and prevented militants from penetrating the compound perimeter. Three British soldiers were killed on Tuesday when a suspected Afghan soldier had fired mortar and escaped.<br/><br/>In another incident, a policeman was killed and three others were injured when a suicide car bomb exploded near a police checkpoint in the southern city of Kandahar today. Provincial spokesman Zalmai Ayubi said the attack was at a compound next to one of several new checkpoints set up around Kandahar to try to ramp up security. The attack was followed by a gun battle with militants.
