In Pakistan, militants attacked army buildings close to the US consulate in northwestern regional capital Peshawar. Police said a number of armed fighters tried to get into the high security area early in the morning which followed gun battle with security forces. Exchanges of fire between the attackers and security forces are continuing.A senior police official Karim Khan told AFP that the target of the attackers is not clear but they were trying to reach a very sensitive area. He said that the US consulate is completely safe. Richard Snelsire, a spokesman for the US embassy in Islamabad, said he had no information right now on whether the consulate was the intended target.The army has sealed off the site of the attack while intermittent gunfire continued.An AFP reporter at the scene said army and police had blocked all the roads into the area while helicopters patrolled the skies.Bashir Bilour, a provincial cabinet minister whose home is in front of the consulate, said “terrorists” had entered an army building and it is not yet know whether they took someone as hostages. The Pakistan army has not yet come out with a reaction.
