Middle East peace Quartet calls for solution that addresses Israel’s legitimate security concerns

The Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators has affirmed that the current situation in Gaza, including the humanitarian and human rights situation of the civilian population, is unsustainable, unacceptable.<br/><br/>In a statement, received by AIR, the Quartet reiterates its call for a solution that addresses Israel’s legitimate security concerns, promotes Palestinian unity based on reunification of Gaza and the West Bank and ensures the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid, commercial goods and persons to and from Gaza.<br/><br/>The Quartet, comprising the United States, European Union, Russia, and the United Nations also declared its readiness to work closely with Israel, the Palestinian Government and international donors in order to achieve sustainable economic development on the basis of broader perspective of the two-state solution.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Israeli defence Minister Ehud Barak has urged UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to shelve plans for a UN-backed independent investigation of the Israeli commando raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last month.<br/><br/>According to Israeli Media Haaretz, speaking to reporters after meeting with UN secretary General in New York, Barak said he told Ban that the five-person panel established by Israel, which includes two foreign observers, would be sufficient for now. <br/><br/>Barak also stated that Israel will hold Lebanon accountable for the blockade-busting ship headed for Gaza, as well as any violence which might erupt as a result of Israel's attempt to stop.
