In Sikkim, the first ever MGNREGA Rajiv Gandhi Sewa Kendra was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at Tanjzi Bikmat Gram Panchayat under the Namthang Block in South Sikkim yesterday. The day marked the 17th anniversary of the Sikkim Democratic Front government coming to power in the state. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Management Information System of MGNREGA which will give access to all the information required under the scheme. Mr. Chamling announced his Government's decision to develop the Damthang area in the district as the first eco-town of the state. AIR Gangtok correspondent reports that in an exercise that can be described as the first of its kind in the country, the Sikkim Chief Minister has embarked on a 36 day marathon tour of the State these days. He will be visiting almost all the one hundred and sixty three Gram panchayats in the state along with all the Ministers, Secretaries and other top officials of the state government for a first hand assessment of the problems and taking on the spot decisions.
