A conference on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme will be held in New Delhi on Wednesday to mark five years of the completion of this flagship programme. It was on this day that the scheme was launched in Anantpur district in Andhra Pradesh five years ago.Under the scheme, 100 days of employment is guaranteed for unskilled manual work in villages across the country. A report showcasing the performance of the programme since it was initiated will be released. There will also be an interactive session with the workers who have completed 100 days of work under the NREGA. The Sarpanchs and the District Project Coordinators will share their experiences. Nearly 1200 delegates will take part in the deliberations. AIR correspondent says that 4.1 crore rural households have been provided jobs under the scheme till December during the current financial year. Ten crore workers were able to open their bank or Post Office accounts under NREGA. The wages under the scheme were increased from 17 to 30 per cent from the 1st of last month with the linking of the wage hike with Consumer Price Index for the agriculture labour. The scheme has also been instrumental to an extent in reducing migration from the villages to the cities.
