Mettur Dam closed for irrigation

In Tamil Nadu, the Mettur Dam has been closed for irrigation today as there is heavy rain in Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur. More from our correspondent: The Mettur Dam which was opened on the 17th of last month for delta irrigation was closed today morning as North east monsoon has become vigorous in delta regions. Mettur dam is opened for irrigation on June 12 every year for Kuruvai cultivation. This time the opening of shutters from Mettur dam was delayed by about three months as Karnataka failed to release more water into Cauvery. At first 4000 cusecs of water was released from Mettur, which was gradually increased to 18000 cusecs. The level of Mettur Dam which was 84 feet on September 17 has come down to 63.93 feet now. For Samba cultivation 135 TMC water is needed out of which 50 TMC water was released from Mettur in 37 days. The rains have come as a relief to the authorities as only 27.70 TMC water was left in the Mettur dam. K DEVI PADMANABHAN, AIR NEWS, TIRUCHIRAPALLI.
