A four-tier system of weather forecast and information system has been chalked out for the Commonwealth Games . ‘Nowcasting’ as the name suggests is a very short-range weather forecasting that will provide venue specific forecast round the clock during the Games. This is being done for the first time in the country. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Dr Ajit Tyagi, Director General of India Meteorological Department said weather conditions in and around Delhi will be monitored with help of a network of 35 Automatic Weather Stations installed in the region. About a dozen manned observatories in the area have been strengthened to provide the observations every hour. A state of the art Doppler Weather Radar has been established at Delhi for monitoring the development and movement of any cloud in the region. The imageries from Kalpana-I satellite will also be used for monitoring purposes. Regular updates of nowcasts will be issued every three hours. A 24 hour control room will be established in the National Weather Forecast Centre, Mausam Bhavan to provide these services to the organizers, government authorities, media and the general public through during the Games from October 3rd to 14. Mr Tyagi said that an analysis of the weather data for the past 110 years showed that there was a 15 to 20 per cent chance of rain during the first half of October.
