Discussion on regional situation with a focus on security situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan, UN reforms, boost to bilateral ties in key areas of defence, security and trade will be highlights of first Indo-German inter-governmental consultations to be held during the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit on Tuesday. She is arriving in New Delhi on a two day working visit to receive Jawaharlal Nehru Award for international understanding for 2009. Our correspondent reports, a number of agreements are also likely to be signed in the field of science and technology and vocational training among other areas after the meeting, headed by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Chancellor Merkel.AIR correspondent reports, with an exception of Israel, Germany for the first time is engaging in a cabinet-level meeting with any non-European country, indicating a political signal to enhance the ties. In a bid to promote economic relations between the two countries, Merkel, apart from her senior cabinet members, including Defence Minister, will be accompanied by a delegation of CEOs of prominent German companies. Annual trade between Germany and India currently stands at 15 billion euros. The nations have set the goal of raising that to 20 billion euros by 2012.According to experts, there will be two important issues that are likely to feature during the discussions — the selection of a new managing director for the International Monetary Fund and the deal for a new fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force.Chancellor Angela Merkel will also inaugurate the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and will be conferred the Jawahar Lal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the President Pratibha Devisingh Patil at Rashtrapati Bhawan in the evening. Ms.Merkel will visit Singapore on her way home on Wednesday Meanwhile, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Guido Westerwelle who arrived on Sunday in New Delhi to help prepare for the first joint India-Germany government consultations on Monday met External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna at Hyderabad House. Both the leaders discussed issues relating to international, regional and mutual concerns. The visiting Minister who is on a eight day five nation tour, will emplane for Sydney in the evening. He had reached New Delhi from Oman.
