Meghalaya along with the rest of the country on Saturday observed the National Sports day to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand Singh.AIR Correspondent reports that on the occasion, more than one hundred sports persons were felicitated with cash awards and citations at a function held in state capital Shillong.A total of 112 sports persons from 11 sports disciplines, who have excelled in both national and regional competition were felicitated with cash awards.Edward Mawthoh, who won a bronze medal at World Kickboxing Championship held at Italy in the year 2014, was also felicitated with a citation and rupees one lakh in cash. Speaking on the occasion, Meghalaya Home Minister Srimati Roshan Warjri said there is no lack of sports persons in the state and hoped that in years to come more infrastructures would be set up to cater to the needs of the emerging sportspersons.She also said that more coaches are needed in the state to train emerging talents in the sports sector.
