Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has said the government will introduce a universal health insurance scheme for those whose annual income is below five lake rupees. The coverage would be one lakh rupees per year and two lakh rupees in the case of critical situation. Dr Sangma told reporters in Shillong that the objective of the scheme was to ensure all categories of people get better medical treatment. The state has already implemented the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, a Central health insurance scheme for BPL families. BPL families need to pay around 30 to 50 rupees as share of premium for registration under the scheme. The chief minister said beneficiaries of the scheme will be issued with Smart Cards to avail health insurance.
