Meghalaya celebrates its 39th statehood day on Friday. It was on this day in 1972, when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the new state at Polo Ground in Shillong. The main colourful function was organised at U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, which was attended by among others Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. Speaking on the occasion, the CM said that he wanted to make Meghalaya as a model state by using its natural resources. He emphasized on the need of resurrecting agriculture, especially organic farming to create economic stability in the state. He said the state will upgrade hydel power project to make Meghalaya self sufficient in electricity once again. Dr Sangma said that state-of-the art educational institutions would be established on PPP model to make Meghalaya as an educational hub of the North-East. He also awarded 15 state government employees with Meghalaya Day Excellence Award for their meritorious and exemplary service. The Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh called upon the people of the state to strive hard to make it at par with other developed states of the country.
