Meeting of Nepali congress, CPN leaders ends inconclusively

In Nepal, a meeting of the top leaders of the Nepali Congress and the opposition Unified CPN(Maoist) to find way to end the current political stalemate ended inconclusively this afternoon.Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Maoist Vice Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha said his party demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister before the government placed its budget in parliament for the next fiscal year. He said issues relating to peace and drafting of the constitution can be discussed after the Prime Minister steps down.Nepali Congress Vice President and parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel said the meeting could not arrive at any decision as the Maoists stuck to their earlier stand demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation before taking up any other issue. The high level meeting between the two parties was held after a long gap in a bid to end the political deadlock and pave the way for forming a national unity government before the Acting President of the Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala leaves for the US later today for medical treatment. The meeting was attended by Sushil Koirala, Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ramchandra Poudal, the Maoist Chairman Prachanda and party the Vice President Narayankaji Shrestha.
