Media has deep role to play in protection, promotion of human rights: NHRC chief

National Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice Cyriac Joseph on Monday said media has a deep role to play in protection and promotion of human rights. <br/><br/>Briefing media on the occasion of 22nd Foundation Day of NHRC, Mr Joseph said media has made huge contribution to successful functioning of NHRC and State Human Rights Commissions by bringing cases of human rights violation to light.<br/> <br/>AIR correspondent reports NHRC has registered over 15 lakh cases since its inception in 1993. <br/><br/>During the last year, in the period between October 2014 to this month, NHRC has registered over one lakh fifteen thousand cases. Out of these, 95,563 have been disposed. <br/><br/>The highest number of human rights violation cases have been recorded in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Odisha, Haryana and Delhi.<br/><br/>Most of these cases relate to alleged police inaction in protection of human rights, abuse of power by police, dowry death, harassment for dowry, indignity of women and inaction by state authorities.<br/><br/>Reacting to Sudheendra Kulkarni ink smearing incident, Mr Joseph said NHRC is committed to protecting freedom of speech.
