Medal winning sportspersons from Karnataka honoured with cash prizes

Medal winning sportspersons from Karnataka were honoured with cash prizes by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in Bangalore today. The medal winners in 19th Commonwealth Games held in Delhi and 16th Asian Games at China, were awarded Rupees 10 lakh for winning Gold, Rupees Seven Lakh for silver and Rupees five lakhs for Bronze. Sportspersons, who had won medal in the Third Commonwealth Youth Games were awarded cash prize of Rs 2.50 lakh, Rs 1.75 lakh and Rs 75,000 for Gold, Bronze and Silver medals respectively. Congratulating the award winners, Yeddyurappa promised that his government will provide the cost of training for those qualified for Olympics 2012 at London. The Chief Minister also assured that the budget allotment for the Sports would be increased in the budget for Rs 2011-12 from the present Rs 98 crore. Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Janardhana Reddy, in his address, assured all help for the promotion of sports and sportspersons in the State to enable them to bring more and more medals in the national and international events. Prominent among those honoured were Ashvini Akkunji, H M Jyoti, both from Athletics, C P R Sudhir Kumar in Weightlifting, Kabaddi player Mamatha Pojari, Tejeswini Bai and S Jiva Kumar, Hockey players Bharat Chetri, Arjun Halappa, Dhananjay Mahadik, Javelin medal winner Kashinath Nayak, Heptholon medal winner Pramila Ayappa. Billiards Gold medal winner in Asiad Pankaj Advani, Tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi were also honoured with prize money and trophy in the glittering function.
