Massive relief, rescue operations on in Quake affected States

Massive relief and rescue operations are on in the Quake affected States of Sikkim, Bihar and West Bengal. The death toll in Sunday's earthquake in the country has gone up to 85, fifty three in Sikkim, 20 in Bihar and 12 in West Bengal.The Union Home secretary R K Singh today said the official death toll in Sunday's earthquake has reached 68. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr Singh said five team of NDRF have reached Mangan. Mr Singh said communication network has been restored in the state. He said roads from Gangtok to Mangan have been open. AIR correspondent reports, over 5,000 troops, six transport aircraft and a total of 15 helicopters have been deployed by the armed forces in Sikkim to carry out relief operations.The road connecting Gangtok with North Sikkim has been cut off at several places. Three battalions of army and one battalion of ITBP with over 4,500 men deployed for relief and rescue work. Work is on to restore road connectivity crucial for reaching the area bordering China. Two Mi-17 helicopter of IAF carried relief material and National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel to Lachen and Mangan in North Sikkim Area.
