Mary Kom shines, claims 5th successive World Championship title

India's woman boxer M C Mary Kom claimed a historic fifth successive World Championship title, beating Steluta Duta of Romania 16-6 in the final at Bridgetown in Barbados yesterday. Mary Kom, who competed in the 48kg category, had defeated Alice Kate Aparri of Philippines 8-1 in semifinal on Friday to assure herself of at least a silver in the sixth edition of the competition. The former Khel Ratna awardee from Manipur thus remained the only boxer to have won a medal in each edition of the World Championship. Talking to PTI about her bout last night, Mary Kom said she could feel the pressure of expectations but never nervous against Duta, whom she had beaten in the World Championship finals of 2006 and 2008 as well. She said that she is hungry for more and will not consider hanging up her gloves before finishing on podium at the 2012 London Olympics.
