Punjab Police officer, Baljit Singh, an SP rank officer who attained martyrdom during a fierce gun fight between police and three heavily armed terrorists in Gurdaspur on Monday will be cremated with full state honours today at his native place Kapurthala, near Jalandhar. This is the second martyrdom in the family as Baljit Singh's father, Inspector Achhar Singh was also killed by militants when the militancy was at its peak in Punjab in 1984. Baljit Singh is survived by his widow, a son and two daughters.

His widow Kulwant Kaur had earlier refused to cremate him demanding a SP rank post for his son in the police and an appointment of tehsildar for his daughter. She said that the family had suffered a lot at the time of the death of her father-in-law, police inspector Achhar Singh, to get appointment for her husband Baljit Singh who had to wait for almost two years to get the job. However, Gurmukh Singh, brother-in-law of the slain officer today told AIR Jalandhar correspondent that the family will abide by the rules and regulations laid down by the government and will cremate Baljit Singh.

It has been learnt that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and some other cabinet ministers are coming to Kapurthala to attend the cremation of the brave soldier of the Punjab Police which is scheduled at 12 noon. Senior police officers had also visited his home late last evening.

Punjab government had already announced financial compensation and a job to the next of the kin of each member of the four police personnel and three civilians who lost their lives in the operation. Meanwhile, three home guard jawans, Sukhdev Singh, Bodh Raj and Desraj who attained martyrdom during the gun fight had been cremated with full state honours, yesterday.
