Philippines President Gloria Arroyo has lifted martial law in the southern province of Maguindanao. Martial law was brought in following the massacre of 57 people in a suspected political vendetta blamed on a local clan, the Ampatuans. A week after it was controversially imposed, martial has been lifted. Officially the government says it has achieved its objectives. Law and order has been established, gunmen have been disarmed and suspects wanted in connection with last month's massacre have been arrested and charged.<br/>
