Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh passed away in New Delhi last evening. He was 98.<br/><br/>The casket containing the mortal remains will be brought to his residence at Kautilya Marg in New Delhi, where Senior Defence officers will pay their respect. He will be cremated tomorrow.<br/><br/>Arjan Singh was admitted to the Army's Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi yesterday following a heart attack. <br/><br/>Born at Lyalpur now known as Faisalabad in undivided Punjab, Marshal Arjan Singh, joined the Air Force at the age of 19 in 1938. He was the only officer of the IAF to have been promoted to five-star rank. <br/><br/>Widely respected and admired for his leadership qualities, Arjan Singh was an iconic figure of the Indian military history. Our correspondent takes a look at his distinguished career. <br/><br/>President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed sadness on the passing away of Marshal Arjan Singh. In a tweet, Mr Kovind said, he is sad at the demise of a great air warrior. He said, Marshal Arjan Singh was a World War II hero and won the nation's gratitude for his military leadership in 1965 war. Mr Kovind conveyed condolences to his family and the Indian Air Force community.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed also grief on the passing away of the Marshal Arjan Singh. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, India mourns the unfortunate demise of Marshal Arjan Singh. He said, People are remembering his outstanding service to the nation. <br/><br/>He said, India will never forget the excellent leadership of Marshal Arjan Singh in 1965, when the Air Force saw substantial action. <br/><br/>The Prime Minister said, Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh's determined focus on capacity building in the force added great strength to the nation's defence capabilities.<br/><br/>Recalling his meeting with Marshal Arjan Singh, Mr Modi said, despite his ill health he tried to get up to salute even though he said no. The Prime Minister said, such was his soldier discipline.<br/><br/>Mr Modi said, his thoughts are with his family and those mourning the demise of a distinguished air warrior and fine human, Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh.<br/><br/>Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharama said the government will be doing maximum to extend the honour, the war hero deserves. She said Marshal Arjan Singh led an exemplary life and fought many wars.<br/><br/>In her message, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani said that the nation is indebted to him for his services. <br/><br/>Paying his condolences, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore described him as a valiant airman, graceful soldier and inspiring leader. <br/><br/>Former President, Pranab Mukherjee described him as an outstanding soldier who led from the front.<br/><br/>Congress President Sonia Gandhi said that he will always be the source of inspiration to the country.
