The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr. Budhadev Bhattacharjee has said that the Maoists problem in the State is not being treated as a law and order problem only, but in adivasi infested areas, economic and social emancipation is also being stressed. <br/><br/>Priority is being given to irrigation, drinking water, education, health and the public distribution system. <br/><br/>Speaking on the occasion of the end of 33 years of left front rule in the State, the Chief Minister said in a booklet released by his party the CPI(M) that a section of the society has been pointing out to the underdevelopment and illiteracy as the main cause of the turmoil. <br/><br/>This, he said, is not true; on the contrary he said, the Maoists have selected the jungle areas of the state to enhance their activities. <br/><br/>Mr. Bhattacharjee refuted the charge that Maoists activities have increased due to underdevelopment of jungle areas of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura, though he admitted that development in these areas have been slow.
