The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today said manual scavenging will be eliminated from every corner of the country in the next six months. Speaking at the inaugural session of the conference of the state ministers of Welfare and Social Justice, Dr. Singh said that the conversion of dry latrines must be completed once and for all. Dr. Singh said the centre will bear the financial liability of the post matric scholarship schemes for scheduled caste students for the entire twelfth Plan period. The Prime Minister said the state government must ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach the scheduled caste students in a transparent manner. He said the expert group of the ministry of Social justice and Empowerment is drafting a new law in place of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. He said, after consulting the state governments and other stake holders, the government willl introduce the bill in Parliament.
