Manual scavenging: NHRC issues notice to Karnataka Govt

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC has issued notice to the Karnataka government on Thursday and sought a report on allegation that manual scavenging is still being practiced in the state. A spokesperson of the NHRC said in New Delhi that the commission had taken suo moto cognizance of a media report about the manual scavenging and has issued notice to the Karnataka Chief Secretary seeking his response within a period of four weeks. The commission has asked the state government about the steps taken by the state government for eradication of the menace since adoption of the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act 1993, by the Karnataka in 1997.
