Manmohan: Nothing should be done to create undue alarm over Mullaperiyar Dam controversy

The Prime Minister has said that nothing should be said or done to create undue alarm among the people on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue as the matter is sub-judice.

In a reply to the letters of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, Dr. Manmohan Singh said ,he has made a note of the points raised by her and also heard the issues raised by a delegation of Ministers from Kerala.

Dr. Singh said that he has already advised the Ministry of Water Resources to arrange an early meeting between the officials of the two states to sort out outstanding issues and allay genuine concerns.

Meanwhile, the water level of 116 year old Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki district of Kerala has gone up further to 136.6 feet.

Heavy rain in the catchment area of the dam and limited outflow to Tamil Nadu has increased the water level.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is in Delhi to seek immediate central assistance to reduce the water level to 120 feet and permission for a new dam.

An emergency session of Kerala assembly has been convened on 9th of this month on the issue.
