Manipur and Meghalaya are today celebrating their 40th Formation Day. It was on this day in 1972 that the two states became full – fledged states of India.In Manipur, the day is being celebrating in a low key in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections. The main function was held at Imphal this morning. In his message to the people of the state, Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat said that restoration of peace was vital to accelerate the pace of development in the state.Meghalaya, which means abode of clouds, first emerged as an autonomous state in the North-East region, bordering Bangladesh, on April 2, 1970 and as a full-fledged State on January 21, 1972. AIR Meghalaya correspondent reports the main function is being organised at State Central Library in the capital Shillong this afternoon where Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma will be the chief guest.Besides distribution of the Meghalaya Day Excellence Awards 2012, other highlights of the programme include the launching of an Information booklet – A compendium of Government Schemes, a Literature on Tourism Schemes and the launching of e-services of Taxation Department. The Chief Minister will also flag-off the Maxi cab services in Shillong.
