Manipur celebrates today the 65th Republic Day of the country amidst tight security in view of the boycott call against the celebration by the militant organizations.
The main function of the Republic Day celebration was held this morning at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal. On the occasion, State Governor V K Duggal unfurled the tricolor. He also took salute of a colorful march-past parade. More than 100 march past contingents including cultural troupes and 11 tableaus representing security forces, NCC, government departments, educational institutions and NGOs participated in the Republic Day parade.
The Governor also handed over 17 gallantry and meritorious service medals to police personnel who have shown tremendous courage while performing their duties. It was also announced on the occasion that 11 Manipur Police personnel have been awarded Police Medal for meritorious service, correctional service and meritorious fire Service. Republic Day is also celebrated at all the district and sub-divisional headquarters of the state.
