The Royal Bengal Tiger-famous Manas National Park in Assam has been opened for tourists from today. The 500 square kilometer park located in the foot-hills of Bhutan will remain open for the visitors till the month of April next year. According to official sources, over seven thousand tourists and researchers from home and abroad visited the famous park during last one year. AIR Guwahati correspondent reports that there has been substantial increase in the numbers of elephants and tigers in the national park with improvement of law and order situation in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). Once a safe haven for militants and poachers, the national park has of late returned to its full life due to efforts taken by the present administration of the BTC. Over five hundred poachers surrendered to the authorities and they have been engaged in plantation and preservation of bio-diversity of the national park. One-horned rhinos have also been translocated in the national park.The sanctuary has recorded 55 species of mammals, 380 species of birds, 50 of reptiles and 3 species of amphibians. Of these, 21 mammals are India’s Schedule I mammals and 31 of them are threatened.
