West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given a seven-day ultimatum to Maoists to lay down arms. She said negotiations for peace will continue but Maoists have to shun violence.Addressing a public rally at Jhar Gram in Maoist hit West Midnapur district this afternoon Mamata Banerjee firmly said that her government is ready to continue peace negotiations with Maoists if they laid down arms.The peace initiatives of the government and killings of innocent people by maoists cannot continue simultaneously. Banerjee gave seven days time limit to the Maoists to made up their mind if they desire to sit with the government for talks. She said that doors are still open for talks. Expressing serious concern over the killing of the innocent people in Jangal Mahal, Chief Minister said that the atmosphere of peace cannot be stalled by terrorism. Banerjee announced a series of welfare programmes to ensure peace and development in the region.AIR correspondent Arijit Chakraborty covering the Chief Minister's visit in Jangal Mahal reports from Jhar Gram that this is the second visit of Ms Banerjee in the Maoist hit area after coming to power in May this year.Earlier, the state government had decided to give compensation of five lakh rupees each to the family of the common man who lost their lives in Maoists attack. Besides it has also decided to set up special employment bank for the people of the Jangal Mahal.
