Mamata’s mother passes away

President, Vice-President and Prime Minister have condoled the death of Mrs Gayatri Devi, mother of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In her message, President Pratibha Devising Patil said Mrs Gayatri Devi had a will of steel. She gave guidance to her children and provided environment at home when they lost their father.In his message, Mohammad Hamid Ansari expressed heartfelt condolences to Ms. Mamata Benerjee and prayed Almighty to grant her strength and fortitude to bear the loss. Dr. Manmohan Singh, in his condolence message said he was deeply sorry to hear the passing away of Mrs Gayatri Devi. He said, he knew how close Ms. Mamata Banerjee was to her mother and he could feel her pain and sense of loss.AIR Kolkata correspondent reports, Union Ministers Dinesh Trivedi, Sudeep Bandopadhaya and Mukul Roy and several other dignitaries visited Mamata Banerjee's residence to pay their last respect to Mrs Gaiyetri Devi. The funeral will take place at Keortola crematorium later this afternoon.Mrs. Gayatri Devi passed away at a hospital in Kolkata this morning after a protracted illness. She was 81. Banerjee, who was on a Delhi trip, rushed to Kolkata on Friday night.
