Mamata, Pranab meet to decide on Cabinet

After securing three-fourths majority in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerji will meet senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee in Kolkata this evening to discuss the Government formation.Sources said Banerji would formally request the Congress leader to join the coalition Government and was also likely to deliberate on the Cabinet formation.Of all the 294 results declared last night, the Trinamool Congress alone secured 181 seats while the Congress bagged 42 seats. Two seats went to Trinamool partner, the SUCI.AIR correspondent reports Banerji has already declared that she would keep the size of the Cabinet smaller than that of the Left Front.Meanwhile, the newly elected members of both the Trinamool Congress and Congress parties will meet in Kolkata tomorrow to chart out the future course of action. Banerjee is planning to revive the West Bengal Legislative Council after her party and ally Congress secured a resounding victory in the Assembly elections. Trinamool Congress sources said the Trinamool chief was mulling the creation of Upper House, essentially to accommodate civil society members who have been backing her against the Left Front Government since the Singur and Nandigram agitation days.On 21 March 1969, a resolution was passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for the abolition of the Legislative Council. Subsequently, the Parliament passed the West Bengal Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1969 abolishing the Legislative Council with effect from 1 August 1969.
