The West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamul Congress Supremo Ms. Mamata Banerjee today marched in a protest rally against the recent hike in petrol prices. The protest procession began at Jadavpur and ended at Hazra crossing in Kolkata. This is for the first time that Ms. Mamata Banerjee took to the streets against the Centre after becoming the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The leaders of the Trinamul Congress including the Ministers were present at the procession. On the other hand the Left Front is also observing a protest against the rise in petrol prices from today. 12 Left Front organizations including DYFI today observed a ‘chakkajam’ for 15 minutes in Kolkata. The Left Front parties will observe a ‘protest-day’ on the 31st of this month. The BJP-led NDA has also called for a nationwide bandh on Thursday next. Meanwhile, the state BJP President Mr. Rahul Sinha has said that his party’s protest against the price hike will continue until the increased prices are rolled back. Meanwhile, the Congress has criticized the protest by the Trinamul Congress. The party’s state President and Parliamentarian Mr. Pradip Bhattacharjee said that, instead of protest the Trinamul Congress-led West Bengal Government would do well to withdraw the Sale Tax on petrol to give succor to the common man.
