Mamata Banarjee says her party will support GST bill in parliament

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that her party will support Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill to ensure its smooth passage in Parliament. She said, she has asked State Finance Minister and Chairman of the Committee of the Finance Minister of the State, Amit Mitra to pursue the matter. Ms Banerjee said, even if her party is politically opposed to BJP, the TMC will support pro-people decisions of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

The GST Bill has already been approved by the Lok Sabha and is pending in Rajya Sabha where the NDA Government does not have a majority. The main opposition party Congress is opposing the Bill. According to finance ministry the GST Bill will simplify the tax regime and contribute significantly for the growth of country's economy. A single rate of GST will replace central excise, state VAT, entertainment tax, entry tax, luxury tax and purchase tax on goods and services to ensure seamless transfer of goods and services.
