Seven of the nine accused in 2006 Malegaon blast case in Maharashtra walked out of the jail today in Mumbai after the court granted them bail on the 5th of November. After spending nearly 5 years in jail, the accused were released against bonds of 50,000 rupees each. However, the other two accused – Asif Junaid Khan and Mohammed Ali Alam Shaikh, were not released as their names also features on the list of accused of July 11, 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts.
Six of those released on bail were lodged in Arthur Road Central Jail and one of them was in Byculla prison. The accused had filed a bail application in October last which was not opposed by the National Investigation Agency, investigating the case. The accused had earlier applied for bail in March but it was denied by the court. The serial blasts had occurred in Malegaon town in Maharashtra on September 8, 2006, killing 37 people. The Maharashtra ATS was initially probing the case which was handed over to the CBI in December 2006. Later the NIA took over the investigations.
