Maldives United Opposition calls for immediate release of its member

The Maldives United Opposition (MUO) has called for immediate release of its member for Reform of Elections Commission and Independent Institutions Mr. Ali Niyaz, who was arrested few days ago.<br/><br/>Mr. Niyaz is also the Deputy Chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party led by former President Mohammed Nasheed. <br/><br/>He was arrested at a political rally held by opposition to oppose meddling in arrangements for upcoming local council elections.<br/><br/>A press statement issued by MUO today called on the Maldives President Yameen Abdul Gayoom to cease disrupting peaceful political activity in the run up to imminent elections. It urged all concerned authorities in Maldives, friendly countries and international bodies to prevail over the Maldives government to immediately release Mr. Niyaz and to garner public credibility for upcoming local council elections to be free and fair.
