In Maldives, former President Abdul Gayoom and two Supreme court judges including chief Justice have been arrested since declaration of emergency last night. <br/><br/>Police said that they have arrested Chief Justice Saeed and Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed in an ongoing investigation. <br/><br/>Former president of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who was in power for three decades, was also arrested last night as a crackdown on the opposition intensified. <br/><br/>The emergency declaration for 15 days came after standoff between President and Supreme court where the former refused to comply by the court order to release opposition leaders.<br/><br/>A spokesman for Maldives President told our AIR correspondent that they are in consultation with judiciary how best to implement the order as there are several procedural implications of the order. <br/><br/>Though opposition MPs maintain that the emergency declaration has to be ratified by Parliament within two days, the spokesman said that it may not be required for declaration of 14 days.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, former President Mohammed Nasheed has urged India and US of intervention to resolve the crisis. Mr. Nasheed in a tweet message called upon India to send an envoy backed by military to release judges and political detainees. He also requested US government to stop all financial transactions of Maldives regime leaders going through US banks. <br/><br/>Earlier, United States has said that it is troubled and disappointed with the decision and called on President Yameen, the army, and police to comply with the rule of law and implement the Supreme Court's ruling. <br/><br/>British foreign secretary in a statement called on President Yameen to peacefully end the state of emergency, restore all articles of the constitution, and to permit and support the full, free and proper functioning of Parliament.
