In Maldives, the killing of a social media activist has invited widespread condemnation from opposition parties, diplomatic and international institutions, media and civil society.<br/><br/>Yameen Rasheed, a known figure in social media circle, was found dead at his house early today after he was repeatedly stabbed. Maldives police said in a statement that they are investigating the killing.<br/><br/>The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the killing involvement of credible international investigative bodies. It said Maldivian Police Service does not possess the capacity, credibility or political impartiality to conduct such a high profile investigation on its own.<br/><br/>The incident has come amidst growing popularity of Maldives government for its crackdown on media and opposition parties. Yameen had received repeated death threats on social media in the past few years.<br/><br/>He was a close friend of Ahmed Rilwan, the Maldives Independent journalist who disappeared in 2014 and has not been found since.<br/>
