Maldives President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said, he was willing to hold early Presidential elections to allow voters to decide who they want to lead the Indian Ocean archipelago. The statement came as political unrest continued in the country after Supreme Court ordered the release and retrial of opposition leaders including exiled former President Mohammed Nasheed. <br/><br/>Speaking publicly for the first time since Thursday's order of the apex court, the Maldivian President said, he was open to holding an election several months before his term ends next November. He announced that he is relaunching his bid for the presidency.<br/><br/>Mr Yameen said, he is currently in talks with justices and are fully deciphering the Supreme Court ruling.<br/>Meanwhile, the Parliament session scheduled to begin from tomorrow has been postponed indefinitely citing security reasons. Besides the release and retrial of opposition leaders, the court in its order had also reinstated 12 lawmakers who had been ousted for switching allegiance to the opposition.<br/><br/>The order gives the opposition a majority in parliament, which has the power to impeach the President.<br/>In another development, President Yameen fired a national police chief for the second time in three days.<br/>Opposition parties have appealed to the international community including the United Nations, European Union, and India to impress upon the Maldives Government to respect the Supreme Court ruling.
