Abdulla Yameen of Progressive Party of Maldives has won the Maldivian Presidential elections. In the results announced last night by the Election Commission, Yameen defeated Mohamed Nasheed of Maldivian Democratic Party with a margin of six thousand votes.
Abdulla Yameen secured 51.39 percent or 1 lakh 11 thousand votes while Mohamed Nasheed received 48.61 or 1 lakh 5 thousand votes. In a statement, Maldives government has said that the polling process was smooth and ended without any major incidents. About 4 thousad observers and 3 thousand monitors, including 45 foreign observers and 22 foreign monitors saw that the elections were credible and transparent.
The winning candidate Abdullah Yameen will be sworn in as the President at a special seating of the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament today.
