Maldives police have arrested a leader of political party as part of government crackdown on opposition for plotting to overthrow the government. Jumhooree Party leader and MP Qasim Ibrahim was arrested last evening on charges of attempting to influence no confidence motions against the Speaker of Parliament. <br/><br/>The arrest comes days after the government defeated a no-confidence motion against the speaker and prevented the opposition bid to take control of Parliament. Qasim is one of the signatories to the agreement last month, pledging to work together to restore democracy and fundamental freedoms in Maldives. <br/><br/>The other signatories were leader of the ruling PPM, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President Nasheed of the Maldivian Democratic Party and Sheikh Imran Abdulla of the Adaalath Party. With the latest arrest, most of the opposition leaders are under some form of detention. A statement issued by the opposition coalition said there can be no greater symbol of President Yameen's contempt for democracy and rule of law.
