Maldives Opposition Initiates Impeachment Motion Against President Muizzu with 55 Signatures

The opposition parties in the Maldives have decided to bring the impeachment motion against President Mohammed Muizzu. News reports in Maldives state that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and 'The Democrats' have gathered signatures to move for an impeachment motion in the People's Majlis (Maldives Parliament). A lawmaker from Maldivian Democratic Party has confirmed the development.<br />'' <br />''The two parties together have 55 Members in an 87 member house. The Parliament had recently amended its standing orders to make it easier to submit an impeachment motion. The constitution, along with the Parliament's standing orders, provides for impeachment of the President with 56 votes. Earlier last week, the two parties had united against current Maldives government's stance with regard to India. The Ibrahim Solih led MDP and The Democrats under Mohammed Nasheed had expressed concern on the direction of foreign policy by the current Maldives Government. They had said that the current administration appears to be making a stark pivot towards an anti-India stance.<br />''<br />''Yesterday, MDP had decided to withhold approval to four members of President Muizzu's cabinet. The ruling PPM-PNC too submitted no-confidence motions against Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem – both from MDP. <br />''<br />''Akashwani correspondent report that The decision of the opposition parties MDP and the Democrats to move an impeachment motion will be a major turning point in Maldivian polity. While the two parties had united against the Maldives government's anti India stance last week, the attempt to remove the President will be keenly watched for. Meanwhile, it has been reported that the opposition parties have sufficient signatures to move the impeachment motion. They have numbers in their favour in the People's Majlis, the Maldivian parliament. The issue had spiralled as chaos reigned supreme yesterday in the Majlis. The Majlis was scheduled to vote on the appointment of Muizzu cabinet and the members from ruling alliance blocked the proceedings as it was likely that appointment of certain ministers would have gotten rejected. Mohammed Muizzu had been elected in September 2023 riding on an India Out campaign.<br />
