Maldives ex-president Nasheed takes refuge in Indian embassy to avoid arrest

Former Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed on Wednesday sought refuge in the Indian High Commission in Male to evade arrest by the local police.

Confirming the news, Nasheed tweeted that mindful of his security he has sought refuge at the Indian High Commission.

Nasheed sought shelter after an arrest warrant was issued against him for not attending a court hearing in connection with a case regarding detention of a judge during his tenure as the president.

As the Indian High Commission is a designated diplomatic area, he cannot be arrested till the time he remains inside the complex.

Tens of policemen in full combat gear have surrounded the embassy while hundreds of Nasheed’s supporters have assembled outside the gates to extend him support. News Content
