Maldives President Abdullah Yameen today expressed his government inability to implement the Supreme court ruling of Thursday which ordered for release of nine opposition leaders. <br/><br/><br/>Mr. Yameen in a letter to Supreme court, said the Thursday ruling is an encroachment on the regulatory powers of the State, the disruption of the functions mandated to State institutions, and the infringement of national security and public interest. <br/><br/>It further said that if implemented, it would potentially lead to an undermining of the supremacy of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives. The letter came in response to Supreme court clarification yesterday stating that there are no legal hurdles in implementing its ruling.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, opposition MPs have signed a resolution calling on the international community including India and western nations to impress upon the Maldives government of the need to respect the rule of law and implement the ruling. The resolution signed by 37 MPs said that they are deeply fearful that the government's refusal to implement the ruling, the police violence, and the increased militarisation of the country, could escalate to civil unrest and incite violence across the country. <br/><br/>Earlier, there were reports of opposition activists staging demonstrations against the government which was countered by police forces.
