Malaysia's highest court has rejected opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's final bid to sue former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad for calling him gay. Anwar lodged the defamation case in 2006, demanding nearly 30 million US dollars in damages after Mahathir said he could not have allowed his former deputy to become prime minister because he was a homosexual. The case was rejected by the high court in 2007 and last year an appeal was struck out. Anwar filed another appeal, saying the judgment should have been made in the official Malay language and not English. Anwar served as deputy prime minister to Mahathir until he was sacked in 1998. He was jailed on sodomy and corruption charges that were widely seen as politically motivated.
