In Malaysia, most of the activists of a banned outfit of ethnic Indians, who were arrested yesterday for taking out a rally against the introduction of a controversial book in school curriculum were released by the authorities. Police had arrested 109 protesters, believed to be members of the Hindu Rights Party – an offshoot of the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) — for protesting against introduction of the Malay language novel 'Interlok' in the senior school curriculum. Police released 101 protesters while eight others, including P Uttayakumar who heads the HRP, were still being investigated. Police said they will be freed once the investigations are completed.A section of the minority community, including the Malaysian Indian Congress — the country's largest ethnic Indian political party, believes the book contains offensive words like 'pariah' which they say connotes a caste system that they claim does not exist in this country.Malaysian government has assured that the book will be introduced in the curriculum only after amendments are made.
