Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar of the Shiromani Akali Dal has been re-elected as President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandik Committee (SGPC) in the general house meeting of the committee at Amritsar on Wednesday. He defeated Harbans Singh Kandola, the combined candidate of various other Akali factions by a margin of 114 votes. He has been elected for the fifth time. SGPC known as mini parliament of Sikhs, manages historical gurdwaras in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pardesh.<br/><br/>Avtar Singh Makkar, polled 139 votes to 25 polled to Mr. Kandola. The name of Jathedar Makkar was proposed by a former SGPC chief, Bibi Jagir Kaur and seconded by Rajinder Singh Mehta in the General House meeting of the SGPC at Amritsar. The name of Mr Kandola was proposed by former SGPC secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta and seconded by Didar Singh Nalvi.<br/>
