The Union Minister of Road transport and Highways, C.P Joshi has said that, the existing traffic management system and road transport infrastructure will be revamped to ensure safety to the most vulnerable road users especially pedestrians and non motorised vehicles.
Speaking to newsmen at the inaugural of the National Workshop of the Ministry of Road transport and Highways, Union Minister C.P Joshi called on making road safety a mass movement program for reducing accidents. He said the State governments and other stake holders should reach out to the people and also cater to the needs and safety of all categories of road users.
Our correspondent reports, the draft of 2012 Amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act is likely to be introduced in the Rajya sabha during the second half of the Budget session of Parliament proposes stringent punishment for repeated traffic offenders, drunken driving and overspeeding. The modernisation proposals of the ministry includes stringent penalties for traffic offenders, drunken driving, overspeeding, use of mobile phone while driving and significantly higher penalties for repeated offenders.
The traffic police system will also be computerised to to serve E-Challans, Networking of traffic data from the states would be made available to Police men through mobile handsets for verification of repeat offences and records. Linking of databases of the traffic police, transport and police authorities, and the Courts. Our correspondent reports the Ministry of Road transport and Highways will also impart training to traffic authorities for stringent enforcement of laws and for the use modern traffic gadgets.
