Major devastation averted in flood prone North Bihar due to timely construction of Ring bundh

In Bihar, a major devastation was averted in Flood prone North Bihar districts of Gopalganj , Siwan and Saran due to timely construction of Ring bundh. Turbulent Gandak has breached a portion of 25 feet main Saran embankment near Batardeh village in Gopalganj district but surging water could not gush into nearby areas due to ring bundh. AIR Patna correspondent reports that if five hundred feet high bundh could not be constructed on time, a major tragedy would have happened. Principal Secretary of State Disaster Department, Vyas Ji told AIR that the ring bundh is being strengthen and hoped that water will not spill. Over two lakh people in the threatened areas have vacated their houses and started reaching relief camps set up by the state government in Gopalganj and Siwan districts of the state. District Magistrate Balamurugan said turbulent river Gandak had suddenly changed its course and breached the embankment. He said 24 panchayats under Barauli,Manjha, Sidhwalia and Baikunthpur blocks of the district have been badly affected. Flood affected people are being evacuated on war footing level. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said all contingency measures are in place to meet any eventuality. The required personnel have reached the site for relief and rehabilitation work.
