With only a couple of days left for issue of notification for the assembly elections in Puducherry, major alliances led by the Congress and AIADMK are yet to formalize seat sharing arrangements with their allies. Though the leaders of the major political parties have had several rounds of talks, sharing the 30 seats has been the sticking point. The core group of the ruling Congress has held talks with the DMK’s seat sharing committee but failed to reach a consensus. Sources in the congress say that the party is demanding 20 out of the 30 seats, which the DMK is reluctant to part with. AIR correspondent reports that the congress party had contested 16 seats in the last elections, allotting 11 to its ally the DMK. On the AIADMK front, emissaries of AIADMK General Secretary Ms.Jayalalitha met the former Chief Minister Mr. N. Rangaswamy, who heads the newly formed All India NR Congress. According to sources, the details of the talks have been conveyed to Ms.Jayalalitha, who will take the final call on the alliance. Even as political parties are negotiating seat sharing, principal players including the chief minister Mr. Vaithilingam have begun door to door campaign in constituencies where they are likely to be fielded.
